Science Test Monday

In case you missed the announcement on Friday, these are the people that you should study for the science test on Monday:

Thales, Stephen Gray, Benjamin Franklin, Alessandro Volta, Thomas Davenport, Samuel Morse, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, John Hopps

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Homework

Math (all classes) - Finish the front and 2 squares on the back of "Rotations Practice" sheet

Science 6B5 - Finish the Insulators and Conductors sheet

Thursday, April 8, 2010

Homework

Some students still need to finish their Tessellation colouring, remember that I will be conferencing with students to make sure everyone can describe rotations, reflections and translations (turns, flips, and slides).

Next Week

We will be moving on to Motion Geometry (Tranlsations, Rotations and Reflections) you'll need to brush up on Co-ordinate Grids = D

In science, we are continuing with circuits, testing the effects of putting more than one light bulb or battery on one circuit. Hopefully this week we will learn about series and parallel circuits.

Monday, March 29, 2010

Updates

There will be a short (not covering too much) Math test on Wednesday for B8/9 and on Thursday for B5
- You will need to know how to find the value of a variable in an equation, how to solve an equation when given the value of a variable, how to write an expression/equation when given a sentence, and how to write a sentence to describe an expression/equation

Key Words: Sum, Difference, Quotient, Product, Increase, Decrease, Total

In science, we have just begun working with circuits. Due to the scheduling this week, and my attendance at Professional Development seminars, students will likely have to wait until next week to continue interacting with the materials.

Happy March Break!!

Science Homework:
6B5/8: Review your notes, and try out some Static Electricity experiments (brush your hair with a plastic comb and hold it near a stream of water)

Math Homework:
The most recent Math package (starts with Multiplying by 1000 and 10 000) should be completed by the end of March Break. Most students will be done or may only have the word problems left to do. Students who have been absent will have more to complete.

Math Update:
We will be beginning Algebra in the week after March Break.

EQAO:
Some students have mentioned that their parents have questions about the EQAO tests. We will begin practicing for the tests after March Break, and you can find lots of information on the EQAO website http://www.eqao.com/  .  There is a Parent's information page as well, which is at this link http://www.eqao.com/Parents/Elementary/036/036.aspx?Lang=E&gr=036

I hope everyone has a terrific and safe March Break, and we'll see everyone on March 22!

Homework (Due Monday)

MATH
6B5 - Complete 2 graphs (and tables of values) based on patterns from Pascal's Triangle. Here is a link to an image of Pascal's Triangle. Try to write an equation (y = x + 2, or n - 3) for each pattern you use.

6B9 - page 16, numbers 5, 6, 7 from the textbook

SCIENCE
6B5 and 6B8 - Complete the Self Evaluation and Reflection (Yellow Sheet) that you received at the science fair yesterday. If you "forgot" the sheet at school, I have copied and pasted the necessities below (you can complete each on a lined piece of paper)

Successful Science Fair!

Congratulations are due for all of the students in 6B8 and 6B5 who participated in the Science Fair today. All of the teachers had great things to say about the effort students invested, and they were impressed with the knowledge each student conveyed!

I would like to thank all of you for being excellent observers and presenters, and I hope you had fun and learned a lot.

Remember, your reflection and self evaluation are due by Monday!

News for the End of January

I apologize that there haven't been many posts recently, this is mostly because there hasn't been a great deal of homework.

In science, 6B5 and 6B8 are working very hard to complete their experiments and get their displays ready for the B5/B8 Science Fair, which will take place February 4. Some students are beginning to fall behind, and have yet to complete their actual tests. They will be encouraged to stay in at lunch tomorrow to complete this integral aspect of the experiment. Again, most work should be completed at school, with the exception of the tests, which can be completed at home (and results gathered) due to the urgent nature of the project.

In math, much of what we have been learning requires the use of materials that are only available at school, therefore, there has been little homework assigned.

Next week, we will hopefully begin Patterning, which will be another relatively quick unit, followed by Number Sense and Numeration (multiplying and dividing whole numbers, and adding and subtracting decimals); which will lend itself to more at home practice.

Happy Belated New Year

After a crazy first week back, I just thought I'd post a bit of an update.

In Math, we are starting Geometry (angles and shapes) next week. The unit will go pretty quickly because we've covered some of it while working on Measurement. If you have a protractor, it will be used a lot in this unit.

In Science, we are continuing the work on the Experiments. Much of January's science classes will be composed of working on the experiments. Very little work will be done at home. Students should bring in their Materials next week.

Of course, in Technology, both 6B5 and 6B8 were introduced to "Bitstrips" (www.bitstripsforschools.com) which is a website that enables students to create their own comic strips, and share them with the class. I will be assigning activities on bitstrips for students to complete during lab time (for example: design a comic that illustrates your procedure for the experiment). For privacy reasons, I won't post the "codes" on this website, but students should know, or have their class code in their agendas.
Some rules for Bitstrips include
- comics must not be used to bully or insult other students
- when using other people's characters, you must ask their permission
- comments about other comics must be positive in nature

This is the first time I have used bitstrips, I would appreciate any feedback anyone may have. In addition, I generally moderate the site on a daily basis, but if students find anything offensive, they should notify me immediately.
